Like many girly girls I’ve always been entranced by the image of the ballerina. The fluidity, the strength… the costumes! So of course I had to pick this theme.
The intersection of corsetry and ballet is interesting - the structure of the corset is echoed in the precision and exacting technique displayed in ballet, but the need for flexibility and movement is at odds with the constraints of wearing a corset.
So I decided to take the ideas of structure and movement as my inspiration. Somehow my head kept presenting me with clouds and birds, so the embellishment in this piece is inspired by both of those things, while the silhouette is very structured and contemporary.
I was extremely lucky to be able to work with the talented actress Marama Corlette, and this corset was also made with her in mind. Marama has danced for some very prestigious ballet companies so I was rather nervous of presenting my work, but she is such a sweety that is all came out alright in the end!
